The SOMM SUMMIT Was Not About The Fruit
SOMM SUMMIT International Wine & Spirits Symposium is dedicated to offering a world-class educational curriculum designed to elevate industry professionals and enthusiasts at all levels of knowledge.
The intensive two-and-a-half-days of seminars organized in Seattle between July 9-12, 2017 invited sommeliers, professionals, collectors, stewards and wine lovers to taste, talk, learn, share and celebrate the world of wine and spirits.
With so much emphasis and study spent on single-varietal wines and analysis of individual grape varieties, The SOMM Journal took the unrivalled initiative to break the mold and open up the discussion to a wine’s provenance, the diversity and implications of terroir and the influence of choices during vinification, aging and bottling.
Presenting the “It’s Not About the Fruit” seminar, the SOMM Journal hosted six wineries to be a part of the panel to present and explore an array of unique terroir-driven wines from one-of-a-kind places, with a range of expressions from berries to basalt, citrus to sand and quince to quartz. The panel was moderated by David Glancy, MS, founder and CEO of the San Francisco Wine School.
As part of the co-operation between the SOMM Journal and Vinum Tokaj International LLC. to promote the Hungarian Wines in North America, the Tokaj Wine Region was presented at the event by Tamás Nagy, Head of Marketing and Education of Szent Tamás Winery. The Szent Tamás Winery, lead by István Szepsy Jr. 18th generation winemaker is the producer of MÁD FURMINT, the most important village level dry Furmint of the Tokaj region, flagship of the “2017 - The Year of Furmint” campaign.
The SOMM Journal will be sharing the seminar’s unique experience with their national readership. Tasting notes, photos and coverage of the event will all run in the October edition of the magazine.
