By joining the initiative of Vinum Tokaj International LLC. and Szent Tamás Winery, elaborated in co-operation with The SOMM Journal, the Hungarian Government also declared 2017 as the Year of Furmint, with the aim to raise and focus the attention of the international and domestic markets as well as the consumers to on one of the most important, indigenous Hungarian grape varieties.
“Furmint is a local grape variety which is worthy of representing the Hungarian wine sector on the international and domestic markets as well” – was emphasized at the opening event of the Furmint February program series in Budapest. Tokaj is already a successful brand and Furmint is the leading grape of the region, that is why a strong support is provided to promote the variety and the wines on the international markets.
The press conference held with the presence of Eliza Kiss, Ministerial Commissioner of the Ministry of Agriculture for Wine Sector Development, Dániel Kézdy, founder of the Furmint February event, István Szepsy Jr., chief winemaker for Szent Tamás Winery and Enikő Magyar, Project Director of Wines of Excellence Program presented the uniqueness of the variety, the products developed by Szent Tamás and Mad Wine wineries for the North American market as well as the marketing and communication campaign initiated to support the market-and brand building activities in the United States and Canada.
The campaign “2017 The Year of Furmint in North-America” was launched on 1st of February with a cover story published by The SOMM Journal magazine presented by Attila Balla, President and CEO of Vinum Tokaj International LLC.
